North Trail's Own SPD Receives Award

Posted by: ntadmin

June 19, 2017, Sergeant Robert Armstrong received the 16th District Congressional Law Enforcement award for Dedication and Professionalism from Representative Vern Buchanan.  Sgt. Armstrong was chosen for his leadership, dedication and hard work with the Sarasota Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit and prostitution diversion program, Turn Your Life Around (TYLA) from September 2015 until March 2017.

Sergeant Armstrong traveled throughout the state of Florida to train other police departments and non-profit organizations specializing in human trafficking in TYLA.  He worked to partner with Selah Freedom to provide four-hour training to all new Sarasota Police officers.  Sgt. Armstrong reached out to every hotel in the City of Sarasota with education material on how to recognize human trafficking and the role the service industry plays.

In 2015, Sgt. Armstrong also received the 16th District Congressional Law Enforcement award for Dedication and Professionalism from Representative Vern Buchanan for his actions and leadership during the investigation of two high profile cases: SRQ Cartel I & SRQ Cartel II.

“Sergeant Armstrong’s dedication to the problem of human trafficking illustrates his exception achievement to the cause of human rights,” said Chief Bernadette DiPino.  “The Sarasota Police Department is dedicated to training our officers, the community and service provides along with our TYLA partners in changing the perception of prostitution from being considering the ‘World’s Oldest Profession’ to the ‘World’s Oldest Abuse Story,” said Chief DiPino.
