USF Sarasota-Manatee remembers Sept. 11

SARASOTA, Fla. (Sept. 07, 2018) – USF Sarasota-Manatee will hold two 9/11 remembrance events at the campus. Both are free and open to the public.

First, USFSM is seeking volunteers, including students, first responders, veterans’ organizations and community groups, to meet at the campus, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, on Sept. 10 at 3 p.m. to plant 2,977 small flags – one for each victim of the 9/11 attacks – into the campus courtyard lawn.

Then, on Sept. 11, starting at 8:20 a.m., the campus will hold a 9/11 remembrance ceremony.

The ceremony will include a U.S. Marine Corps color guard and members of the Sarasota Military Academy, St. Stephens School choir and several first responder agencies from Sarasota and Manatee counties.

Among those will be the Sarasota Fire Department, Cedar Hammock Fire Department, USFSM/New College Police, Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, SRQ Airport Police Department and SRQ Airport Fire Department.

David Kotok, chief investment officer at Sarasota-based Cumberland Advisors and a survivor of the South Tower attack, will be the keynote speaker.

Free refreshments will be offered.

To volunteer, contact Carlos Moreira, USFSM’s veterans’ services administrator, at (941) 359-4291 or write to cjmoreira@sar.usf.edu.
