Elite Airways to Connect Pirates Fans to Gulf Coast

Pittsburgh Pirates fans now once again can fly direct from the home field in Pennsylvania to the spring training ground in Bradenton. Elite Airways on Friday announced that it would begin twice weekly flights between Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport and Pittsburgh International Airport starting in February.

“We’ve been working on this for six months, trying to get this destination,” says Rick Piccolo, president and CEO of SRQ Airport. He says direct flights between the cities existed in the past, from 1989 to 1997, but those flying between the cities for the past two decades were forced on connecting flights. Since then, PIT has risen to be one of the top 15 desired destinations for direct flights to SRQ.

More Canadian Flights Added to Bradenton-Sarasota Airport

Canada Flights Strong, WestJet Adds Flight
Jacob Ogles,

While a weak Canadian dollar has caused some angst in the hospitality area in region, competitive air fare has provided some measurable success, as demonstrated by a decision announced by WestJet on Monday to add flights from Toronto into the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport. The airline will now have flights from Toronto Pearson International Airport to SRQ airport and back three times a week—on Sundays, Tuesdays and Fridays—through April 29 this year. Tuesday service starts on Feb. 23. “It’s really good to see that an airline that has only been in the market now for about two months is already increasing their service," said Rick Piccolo, president and CEO for SRQ airport. “It’s a good signal of how well they are doing.”

The announcement comes after some fear in hospitality circles that an underperforming Canadian dollar would lead to reduced travel to destinations in the United States; the Canadian dollar as of Monday evening was valued at just 72 U.S. cents. But WestJet has reported strong profits even amid concerns. Just last week, the Toronto Stock Exchange approved WestJet to maximize the number of shares the company is authorized to purchase next year. “Notwithstanding the impact that recent economic weakness in Alberta has had on our results, our decision to increase our normal course issuer bid demonstrates our confidence in WestJet's proven business model and the financial strength of our airline," said WestJet President and CEO Gregg Saretsky. The company in 2015 announced record full-year net earnings of $367.5 million, up 16 percent from 2014.

Air Canada Connects SRQ to Great White North Year-Round
Jacob Ogles,

Non-stop international air service to Toronto will soon be available twice a week all year for travelers flying out of Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport, a development that marks the first time the airport could offer service to Canada any month of the year. Air Canada on Tuesday announced new Sarasota flights, starting in May, as part of a long-term expansion strategy for the airline.

Flights between SRQ Airport and Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) will kick off May 2, when the airline will begin twice-weekly non-stop flights, on Thursdays and Saturdays. Right now, non-stop service to Canada is only available seasonally.

SRQ Airport Boosted by United Newark Service

Posted by ntadmin in SRQ Airport , Sarasota , North Tamiami Trail

Airport officials in Sarasota for the past seven years have heard one destination requested as a place passengers want to fly but cannot. That destination, Newark, will come within reach of SRQ Airport travelers in February when United Airlines starts non-stop flights from Sarasota to New Jersey.

“It’s the most requested route we’ve had from the public,” said Fredrick Piccolo, president and CEO of SRQ Airport. “Every time I give a speech people ask about it, and then they follow up with phone calls and emails.”

United announced on Monday that the airline will offer seasonal daily service starting Feb. 12 and running through May 15 in 2015. Tickets are available for purchase now. The flight provides a direct connection between SRQ Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). The New Jersey airport is critical in creating a flight network because it houses United's New York hub, from which the airline services a total of 142 domestic and international destinations.

SRQ Tweaking Budget to Improve Fiscal Year Results

Posted by in SRQ Airport , North Trail , North Tamiami Trail

Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) is still struggling to recover from the year-old loss of its second-largest carrier, and that shortfall was on display Monday as officials debated a proposed 2014 budget.

To offset the loss of AirTran Airways, SRQ board members and airport officials plan to raise short-term parking fees, increase airline rental rates and eliminate some full-time positions.

Frederick "Rick" Piccolo, the airport's president and chief executive officer, said the changes will improve fiscal year 2014's results.   "This will be the first full fiscal year without the benefit of AirTran's robust service from SRQ" said Piccolo in a report attached to a 2014 budget proposal.

North Trail Sarasota: Airport Traffic High

The number of passenger traffic in and out of Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport has increased at a faster rate than other destinations on the Gulf Coast.    The news comes just as SRQ Airport is about to lose AirTran service in mid-August.

"The carriers that operate in our market increases SRQ traffic numbers for the first six months, providing jobs and economic benefit to our community," said Fredrick Piccolo, SRQ Airport president. "Residents and businesses should keep this in mind when making future travel plans."

AirTran Airways will abandon Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport in less than a fortnight, despite a slight increase in passenger traffic through the first half of this year.

"No, it doesn't make any sense to me either," said airport CEO Fredrick "Rick" Piccolo, still frustrated by the discount carrier's January announcement that it will depart.

At mid-year, AirTran -- Sarasota-Bradenton's second-largest carrier behind only Delta -- handled 214,426 passengers at the local airport, nearly 3,800 ahead of last year's pace.
