Universities exist both to create knowledge and to pass the knowledge won by previous generations to the rising generation. They exist for their students. And, in a very real sense, a university’s students and graduates embody that institution. They physically represent what that university produces.  But a university’s faculty is the institution’s soul.

Students graduate. But it is not uncommon for faculty members to serve 30 or 40 years. Collectively, they determine the nature of an institution: how welcoming it is, how innovative, how rigorous, and how outward facing.

There are few jobs as interesting, or as all-consuming, as full-time faculty positions at institutions that value teaching. The best faculty members love their disciplines and they love teaching. To love a discipline means to practice it, to advance knowledge in that discipline, and to contribute to that discipline. That is a full-time job. To love to teach means to care about students, to be able to motivate and encourage each student and to adjust to the different ways in which each individual student learns. That, too, is a full-time job. A typical professor views holidays, when the university is not in session, as an opportunity to do research in labs or in the field or in archives.

North Trail's New Hope in College Consortium

Posted by ntadmin in Universities , North Trail , Colleges

New College of Florida, Ringling College of Art & Design, University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee, the State College of Florida, Florida State University's satellite arts program at the Asolo and Eckerd College in St. Petersburg announced last month that they would form a partnership called the Consortium of Colleges of the Creative Coast, nicknamed C4.

The partnership will enable the colleges to share resources — such as campus police departments — and allow students to take courses at the various participating schools. For example, a student studying film at Ringling College could take a foreign language course at New College and a marketing course at USF Sarasota-Manatee.

While the C4 partnership is primarily an academic one, local business owners and college leaders say they hope increased visibility of the local colleges will spur redevelopment along the North Trail..

SARASOTA - The catchy name is “C4,” the clunky one is the “Consortium of Colleges on the Creative Coast.”

But whatever the label, the idea is for four local colleges to join forces and transform the North Tamiami Trail area into a vibrant college center.

State Budget Funds Major Projects at New College

Florida's newly approved budget funds two major initiatives at New College of Florida: $3 million for a 22,000-square-foot addition to the Heiser Natural Sciences complex that will increase classroom, office and laboratory space by about 50 percent; and $500,000 for programming at the Center for Engagement and Opportunity, the College’s career services program. Gov. Rick Scott’s signing follows the state board of governors’ restoration of another $540,000 to New College’s budget, money initially withheld under the board’s performance metric system. The board has now restored the entire $1.1 million it withheld in June 2014.
